What I did on my holiday!

Well sadly the week has not ended that well. I have the dreaded cold that my hubby and kids have been putting up with and I am feeling very sorry for myself. I do hate colds they make you feel so awful but thankfully I get them very infrequently so I guess I should count myself lucky. But anyway before the dreaded lurgey set in I did manage to get some serious sewing done and I thought I would show you it here.

The top picture is from The Quilt Room found hereย and took me a day to do. I have the backing and wadding just need to finish it off now. The second picture is my own design called “Shattered” and will be a quilt for my eldest daughter and the bottom picture is a cushion that I made and was taken off me by my youngest daughter.

I have had a lovely week off work and feel like I have my mojo back a bit.

Hope you are all well

Cathedral Window quilt sampler

So I have finally managed to get some sewing done. I finished the Raspberry Ripple quilt that I started almost a year ago and it takes pride of place on my bed. Just to give you an idea of size my bed is a super king size bed so it is quite a big quilt Raspberry ripple quilt

I finished this quilt with free motion meandering detail and I am really pleased at how it came out. I tried to machine sew the binding and not hand finish it with some varied results and think that in the future I may stick to hand finishing that final bit but I am very pleased with this quilt.

Today I have been practicing cathedral window quilt samples. This is deceivingly easy to do but getting the squares square and ironed accurately does make a difference so is a little fiddly to begin with. I also struggled to get the window pieces accurate so when you look close up there are a few gaps but….. this is a scrummy quilt that I will be making on a bigger scale in the near future.

I have a week off now with a few things that need to be attended to and hopefully an old friend for me to catch up with and also some considerable sewing.

Raspberry Ripple quilt

OK so I have bitten the bullet and gone for it. I am free motion stitching today. I hope to get this quilt finished by the end of my holiday, not sure if that will actually happen but I am giving it my best shot.

I have decided on doing a meandering quilting stitch. This will be on all of the triangles around the edges and contrast stitching on the cream sections. Lets hope it looks as good as it does in my head LOL

Paper Piecing

599486_10151616194720739_914854772_nS0 I am trying my hand at paper piecing. My mum used to do this when I was a child but I don’t remember her making it into a final design, just lots of paper and scrap fabric. I am quite enjoying making this, it is time consuming as it is all hand sewn and my hand sewing is not that neat. I am not sure that that matters to much as when it is the size I want it to be I can back it and then finish it with some decorative sewing which means that my poor hand sewing won’t notice.

Anyway work in progress and I will update you regularly

Hope you are all well

Nearly finished.

I have finally managed to get all of the blocks together and the border to complete the quilt top.
I am actually quite angry with myself cos i made a really stupid mistake with following the pattern so the design is not as crisp as it should be. In a few places the lines don’t match up but this is my first attempt at a quilt this big with a complex pattern (well complex for me!)
Now all i have to do is buy the batting and backing and finish it off.

Charm Pack Quilt

Can you believe I may actually finish something I start!!!! Gonna be a first I think LOL. I have backed the quilt I started the other day and this evening I hope to bind it and it will be finished.

Making this quilt has made me realise I am not a good finisher. I think I must get bored. I have tons of unfinished cross stitch that I started years ago. I think that if it cannot be done quickly then I lose interest. Maybe I have learned more than just how to sew today eh ๐Ÿ™‚

The quilt so far…….

Crafting on a snowy afternoon

So what have you guys been up to today. Here in the UK (I think I have some international readers ๐Ÿ™‚ )it is snowing. Unusually for us it has actually been snowing all day and so far we have had about 3 or 4 inches. This is mega in the UK the country is about to grind to a halt and the usual debate will ensue about how we are so bad at coping with it and why should the schools shut etc. Me……..I am on holiday this week from work so I don’t care ha ha ha. I have some stuff organised that needs to be done but I fully intend on relaxing.

One of the things I wanted to do was to get back on my sewing machine as it has been so long. I have treated myself to a couple of charm packs and made this today for my eldest daughter.

Excuse the naff picture but I am really pleased with it. It took one charm pack only and makes a nice medium size quilt. I am surprised at how much I have learned today whilst I have made this. Stupid stuff like even with a scant 1/4 inch seam those seams soon add up and make a bit difference in the size you get (i hope that statement makes sense!!!). I also now realise the importance of ironing, ironing and ironing again after each step. Anyway more learning to be had now. I need to buy backing fabric and the sandwich it together with the wadding sew the 3 layers together and then bind it. I have found a useful blog entry with an excellent guide to all 3 stages just gotta find it again now and save it .

Hope you are all warm and well

Love heart decoration

My latest creation is this love heart decoration. I hope to make quite a few of these and use them as part of my Christmas decorations. I have the idea of some kind of bunting design with the jute twine that I have bought. I have cut all the hearts out now just to put them together.

I am still sewing the blocks together for my Drunkards Path quilt as well but I find sewing the same thing over and over really boring so I have to do it in stages. Goodness only knows how long that will take me ha ha ha.

Right I best get back to my hearts

Snail’s Trail

I am experimenting with quilting blocks and have decided to use the Snail Trail pattern. To get the best idea I need to show you how it can look so this photo is from Melody on Flickr. Isn’t it a gorgeous looking quilt. I sincerely hope mine looks at least halfway as good.

Other news. I have signed up for my Masters again and this starts tomorrow so just as I decide to get on with some sewing studying comes along again but anyway at least I can use it to keep me from getting stressed with exams and essays lol

TTFN another block is calling me
